Your voice belongs in the team too.

For readers drawn to rugby and building something together. Discover a story where competing honestly, asking for help and hearing quieter voices all belong to the same team.

You might already love rugby, or be discovering it for the first time. This illustrated origin story invites you behind the sporting moment: into the doubts, friendships and choices that help shape Lion before Sportia.

There is room for what you feel.

Sport can bring excitement, pride and a wish to improve. It can also bring nerves, disappointment and the feeling that everyone else has it worked out. Lion’s story makes room for those less visible moments, exploring assertiveness, honesty and belonging.

An invitation to recognise yourself in a character, talk about a difficult moment and wonder what another choice might look like. The story does not promise a perfect athlete: it gives you someone to accompany as they learn.

Discover the person behind Lion.

Lion is unmarked, but cannot bring himself to call for the ball. Helping comes easily; making himself heard does not. His story begins with a voice that is not ready to come out.

Follow the journey across 22 illustrated scenes, from early challenges to Lion’s place at Sportia. Everyday details sit alongside sporting ambition: a conversation, a shared practice or a question can matter as much as the moment everyone applauds.

A sporting world with people at its heart.

What kind of teacher does that journey create? The later scenes bring Lion to Sportia, where new children arrive with their own excitement, doubts and ways of learning. Discover how this teacher’s experience shapes the way they welcome others into rugby.

For young readers—and the adults beside them.

Written for children aged 7–11, with the emotional experiences of this age in mind. Read independently or together, then use the story to open a conversation about assertiveness, honesty and belonging. Ask which moment felt familiar, whose choice surprised you and what you might want to try or ask about next.

The reader also includes a small challenge and words from the sporting world. This is an illustrated story to enjoy and discuss, rather than a technical training programme.
