The Entourage · Chapter II — Those Who Shaped Their World

Those Who Shaped Their World
From the upper floors of Axis Tower, Antonio Rey watched the transport lights move between islands.
As High Warden of Arkadia, he was responsible for the security and stability of the archipelago. Silver-haired, impeccably dressed and difficult to read, Rey had learned to consider the consequences of a decision long after everyone else had welcomed its immediate benefits.
Every light is a responsibility.

A city like Arkadia could not run on hope alone. He knew the cost of its protection, the pressure upon its resources and the expectations Supra placed upon its work.
His attention frequently returned to Arkademy.
There, the next generation was being prepared to inherit everything his own generation was still struggling to hold together.

AXIS TOWER
THE HIGH WARDEN'S SEAT
Location: Arkadia · Central administrative district
World: Earth · Zion
Terrestrial year: 2128
Resident: Antonio Rey · High Warden
Purpose: Civic authority · Security · Stability

Doctor Fernand Claes saw those students at closer range.
He knew their questions, their ambitions and the excuses they invented when a project was late. He could discuss an educational report for hours, then set it aside because a child who appeared successful on every measure had stopped enjoying anything.
Tell me what is troubling you.

Fernand had developed the Arkaders Program to help young people become capable of understanding and acting in a complicated world. He believed knowledge mattered most when it changed how a person made decisions.
Rey respected his intelligence. He did not always share his patience.

Supra wants to know what they will become,
Rey said.
Fernand adjusted his spectacles.
So do they.
That hardly answers the question.
It might help us ask it more carefully.

Among Fernand's students were six young people whose abilities had attracted exceptional attention. They had grown up in Arkadia's care, without the family histories that other children took for granted.
Their development continued to surprise the people studying it. Their origins remained unresolved.
Rey saw possibilities that the archipelago could not afford to ignore.
Fernand saw six seventeen-year-olds who deserved time to discover possibilities of their own.
Give them time to find their own answers.
