The Entourage · Chapter V — The New Elite

The New Elite
Other students arrived at Arkademy with their futures already spoken of as achievements.
They were the humans of the New Elite: children whose inherited genetic enhancements could improve health, cognitive ability and physical development. The modifications varied, as did the people who received them.
I want the result to be mine.

Some carried the expectations of their families with pride. Others struggled beneath them. Many wanted the freedom to discover who they were without every success being attributed to their genes.
Arkademy brought them together with students from other backgrounds. Sharing a building did not erase the differences between their lives.

Together, the six had become a familiar presence around Arkademy.
They were talented enough to expect recognition. The attention given to The Entourage made that expectation harder to satisfy.
The encounter began on a terrace above one of the channels.
Jason and his friends stood beside the walkway when The Entourage emerged from the academy. Beyond the railing, a passenger vessel slipped beneath a bridge.
Here they come.

I hear Fernand has another project planned for you,
Jason said.
Max glanced at the others.
We hear that quite often.
Some of us have to earn that much attention.
Kira stopped.
You could ask him about the project.
I was asking why it is always the same six people.
It isn't,
Kala said.
You know that.

Lyra looked towards Tom.
You have access to facilities most students only see on a timetable.
Then ask for access,
Tom replied.
We do,
Nadia said.
That is rather the point.
For a moment, nobody answered.

Vega looked at Jason.
If you have a complaint about the timetable, why are you blocking the walkway?
Dorian laughed. Cass took a step towards the open space between them.
Selene moved aside before he reached it.
Of course. We wouldn't want to delay you.
The courtesy made the silence worse.

Jason remained where he was.
When the academy finally puts us on equal terms,
he said,
I hope you'll be this confident.
Cass smiled.
Make sure you're there.
Cass,
Kira said.
He looked back at her, then stepped past Jason. The others followed.
Nadia watched them go. Lyra was still studying Tom. Adrian leaned towards Jason and said something too quietly for the departing group to hear.

They reached the next bridge before Max spoke.
Well. That was welcoming.
They think we are being favoured,
Kira said.
They think being born into District 200 is a personal accomplishment,
Vega replied.
Kala looked back towards the terrace.
Both things can bother them.

Cass rested his hands on the bridge railing.
Let them compete with us.
They will,
Tom said.
Below them, the water carried a broken reflection of the academy's towers. Students crossed the bridge in both directions, already talking about other things.

We can do this.
Yeah. We can.
The six stayed there a little longer.
They were proud of what they could do. They were tired of having to explain why they were allowed to be there. And none of them liked how easily Jason could make an ordinary afternoon feel like a challenge.

When they reached home, Pandora looked up from the table.
How was your day?
Six answers arrived at once.
Circe, standing by the window, folded her arms and waited for the version they could agree on.
Complicated.
Ask Jason.
Let us explain.
One at a time.

Later, music travelled through the residence. Across the channel, Arkademy's windows remained lit. Further away, Axis Tower rose above the administrative islands, where reports from the outside world continued to arrive.
Arkadia had given its children an extraordinary place to grow up.
Sooner or later, they would have to decide what to do with everything it had given them.

For the moment, Max had missed his entrance, Cass refused to stop laughing, and Vega wanted to start the song again.
That entrance was intentional.
Of course it was!
From the beginning.
